Burda Shorts 104 02/2017 & self drafted pleated skirt

Well I have been procrastinating over the past several weeks. Why? Because I ran into a fit issue on my next piece that has derailed me while I figure out what pattern to use to replace it / get up the mojo to have another go. However this shouldn’t have affected the blog, because these two pieces were finished and photographed before this debacle arose.

This is an extremely simple box pleated skirt, based on the beautiful striped barkcloth and wanting to show it off. The hardest part about this skirt is the original math, which since I’m a visual person, looks a like this:

I simply cannot do that kind of math without pictures. This may inform my choices of math classes through high school and college (no calculus).

After looking at the pictures for a couple of weeks I have decided that while I like the length of the skirt in theory, I really need to raise the hem 3-4 inches and have it knee length instead.

The second piece I finished were some Burda shorts with a high waist, draped pleats and a turned up hem. I struggled with this turned up hem, it was not cooperative, but we got there in the end. I can’t even fault the directions, I knew how it was supposed to work, it just didn’t want to. Please don’t judge the fact that these desperately need to be pressed, I hadn’t intended on taking photos of them that day, but since the sun was out I grabbed everything that was complete and tried it on.

I made these out of a soft and comfortable tencel twill, and they are very comfortable. My only issue with the pattern is that the flap on the back doesn’t cover a real pocket. Could I have installed a welt pocket on my own without the pattern’s instructions, yes, but at the end of the day the tencel twill has a lot of drape and I thought it might be best to leave it out for fear of drooping welts. And with decently sized front pockets, I do not have to go without someplace to carry my essentials.
