Welcome to Red Bird Studio.

Red Bird is my space to explore and document my projects and enthusiasm for a maker lifestyle.

New Year; Starting Fresh

New Year; Starting Fresh

Ah my attempts at keeping up with the blog all tumbled down the second half of last year. I wish I could say it was major life events keeping me from updating, but no it was just laziness. I say laziness, but I wasn’t idle… I made lots of things, traveled with my husband, and made time for family. The laziness comes only in the form of documenting these things. I have two problems with keeping up with the blog:

  1. I HATE taking pictures. I dislike photos of myself, I always feel awkward. I also dislike taking photos, I’m not good at it. I can tell you what makes a great photo and pick photos apart and edit them, but I am unable to capture them myself.

  2. I don’t want to take the time to write the posts, because that takes time away from getting started on the next thing. I love to be making and writing about the projects just isn’t as fun for me.

However this year I want to be a bit more reflective and intentional about my projects. With this in mind I have started thinking about year goals for 2020. I know you’ve already read about a million of these posts on the blogs you follow, but it is that time of year.

I have 3 goals for this year

They are simple and leave me plenty of room to change my mind about patterns, fabric, and what my life needs.

  • Create one garment per month

  • Write one blog post per month

  • Work hard to sew mainly from my stash fabric ( I have a lot!)

Each fabric labeled with pertinent information.

My husband worked hard this year and has redone my studio space with new cabinetry that has helped me bring my stash out of bins in the closet and reorganize it in a way that I can actually see what I have. Now fabrics that I have won’t get lost in the stacks and I can shop my own stash for a while.

The middle section with the cork board is a murphy bed, getting the mattress out of my way when we don’t have guests, as well as providing me a way to organize my ideas. And those boxes on the top shelf are helping me organize my growing pattern collections.

Starting Strong

January has just started, but I am working toward my three goals already. This post doesn’t count for my January blogging goal, but I hope to have a couple of projects to choose from. Including a few from the end of last year that I would like to share with you all.

I am going to take part in #sewfancypants on instagram this year. I have started prepping my pattern and fabric for making some Lander Pants by True Bias. I know everyone else has made this pattern, and I’m a little late to the game. But, better late than never. I found some Robert Kaufmann Ventana Twill in my stash and it is slated to become my Landers.

My sewing adventures over the past couple years has taught me a lot about fitting for my own body, so when making my toile I only had a couple of alterations I needed to make to my pattern. I graded from an 8 at the waist to a 12 at the hips, per my measurements. But since I have tall hipbones, I ended up needing to add a bit more back to the waist, and alter the seat curve to better fit my shape.

Before I ended my first day of the year, I ordered my buttons for the button fly and washed my fabric. I can’t wait to dive in.

And since I’m me, I also prepped the Toaster Sweater 1. I’m going to be using boiled wool/viscose fabric scraps leftover from Christmas presents to make a fun color-blocked version.
