Butterick 6655 (Spring 2019 Collection)
We are finally getting some warm weather here and I can wear the floral dress I made months ago for spring.
The pattern is a pretty basic shift dress with the addition of an offset faux button up panel down the front. I made it in a lightweight linen cotton blend from fabric.com
I had to do some adjustments to get this to fit the way I want, but am happy with the result. I generally shy away from the shift silhouette as it can be difficult for my bodyshape, but I like the vintage bent of the pattern. I did my usual grading from my 34 bust to 42 hips, but once I tried the dress on I realized that the fact that I have broad shoulders and a small ribcage was causing gaping at the arm holes. To fix this problem I added armseye darts .
I opted to keep the sleeve the same and gather it at the top for a little extra movement room, instead of altering the pattern piece to take into account the adjustment to the armseye with my small darts.
By the way I made a mistake when making the dress, can you catch it?
If you guessed that the floral pattern is upside-down go get yourself a cookie, or a drink, which is what I wanted when I realized what I had done. See I had been careful laying out the fabric and the pattern pieces to make sure everything fit the correct direction, but I had to put everything up when we had people over. And when I came back and started laying each piece individually and cutting, I laid out my fabric with the fold in the opposite direction I had before. I cut one piece and realized what I had done! Unfortunately there wasn’t enough fabric to recut, so I decided to go for it all upside-down instead.
Overall I like this pattern. I would continue making a few adjustments if I make it again.
I would add about 1/4 to 1/2 inch to the back panel at the shoulders. I find that it pulls just a little bit across my upper back.
hack the pattern to have a flat back and true button or snap panel. This will include making some front facing pieces, but I think it can be done
