Calyer Pants: French Navy Patterns

Calyer Pants: French Navy Patterns

I have been sitting on this review for about two weeks now, because the whole Red Bird team has been out of commission. The supportive husband/photographer right down to the moral support pup had bad colds made worse by endless winter. But we are all feeling tip top and I am excited to dive in.

I love this pattern. These pants were so easy to make some basic alterations, sew up and wear. Plus, they are extremely comfortable. I didn’t even take them off after our photoshoot, just added a cozy sweater and went on with my day.

I made these first ones with a polyester twill in Italian evening blue from Mood Fabrics. I purchased the fabric on sale without a specific pattern in mind and decided my first pair of Calyer pants were the perfect use. The brushed twill looks a bit like a suiting with some good drape, which makes them perfect for being secret pajamas for my day job. I don’t know about you, but having basics in my wardrobe that are as comfy as pajamas make the work week so much better.

Since I was working with fabric with a fair amount of drape I went with the pleated front version. I graded from a medium at the waist out to a large for the hips with an added inch or so to the back crotch curve at the point, which has become a typical alteration for me. I also added a little bit of room in the front leg at the upper thigh for a bit more comfort.

These were a really quick pair of pants with a toile and this version being completed in about a day and a half. The instructions are very well laid out and clear. I would recommend these pants to anyone. Even a beginner sewist or someone with a pants phobia can put these together, and the elastic back allows you to do only minor fitting adjustments.

I will definitely be making another pair of these. I think a flat front pair in a nice mid-weight linen will be just what I need come summer.
